Things I Meant To Say

Things I Meant to Say is a collection of text-based paintings about the words we hold onto — the ones typed and deleted, rehearsed and never spoken. Today our thoughts arrive in typed bubbles on a screen — quick, uniform, and gone in a scroll. Anyone remember cursive?  This collection is my way of holding onto what we're losing. I build each painting in layers: a deep base color buried beneath a thick top coat. Then I write into the wet surface, scratching through with different tools until the color beneath comes to light. There's an urgency to it because the paint only stays workable for so long. What emerges is handwriting freed from legibility: loops and strokes that carry feeling without fixed meaning. Every painting holds words I meant to say — offered to the viewer to interpret, the way we all fill in the blanks.
